Professor. (Chief) A.B.O. Olukayode Oyediran

      

Allen Bankole Oladunmoye Olukayode Oyediran was born in Lagos on 18th May 1939, eldest child of the late Mr. Augustus Bandele Oyediran and the late Mrs. Victoria Bolajoko Oyediran (nee Alao Ojo).

His late father was Principal, Methodist Boys' High School, Lagos, Nigeria's first High Commissioner to Sierra Leone, first General Secretary, Offa Descendants Union, and first Chairman, Board of Governors, Offa Grammar School. Olukayode was educated at CMS Girls' School, Lagos, MS Grammar School, Lagos, and King's College, Lagos, where he was Secretary, Kings' College Society in 1957.

He read Medicine as an AC scholar at Guy's Hospital Medical School, London, and graduated MB, BS (Lond) in 1964 when he also obtained the LRCP (Lond) and MRCS (Eng) diplomas.

He undertook postgraduate studies in Britain as a Commonwealth Medical Scholar from 1968 to 1970. In 1969 he became the first-ever recipient of the D.T.M.&H (Edinburgh) with distinction and, in addition, was awarded the Greig Medal in Tropical Medicine. He proceeded MRCP (UK) in 1969, obtained the Certificate in Epidemiology and Medical Statistics of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1970, the Certificate in Immunology, University of Ibadan in 1975, and the M.D. (Doctor of Medicine) degree of London University in 1976.

He was awarded the Fellowship of the Nigeria Medical Council in Public Health (FMCPH) in 1974, and the Foundation Fellowship of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in 1976. In 1987 he was awarded the Membership of the Faculty of Community Health of the Royal Colleges (MFCM), and elected to the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP) and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE).

He was Hon. Assistant Lecturer in Medicine at St. Thomas's Hospital Medical School, London from 1966 to 1967, and joined the academic staff of the then Faculty of Medicine, University of Ibadan, in 1970 as Lecturer Grade I. He became Senior Lecturer in 1973 and was promoted to the grade of Professor in 1976. He has been a Consultant Physician at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, since 1970.

Professor (Chief) Oyediran is the author of many publications and is on the editorial panel of several learned journals including Tropical Doctor and the West African Journal of Medicine. He has been examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations in Public Health at many universities in Nigeria, Ghana, and the West Indies, as well as for the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians.

At the University of Ibadan Professor (Chief) Oyediran has held many positions of responsibility including the headship of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine (1976-79), Chairman, Board of Health (1976-79) and Chairman, Council Consultative Committee on Community Development (1977-82).

At the national level he has served on several medical panels including the Kwara State Health Management Board. On the international scene he has served on several panels of the World Health Organization (WHO) and is Currently a member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Parasitic Diseases (Schistosomiasis). He was Vice-President of the Association of Public Health Schools in Africa, Asia and Oceania from 1977 - 1979, Secretary-General, West African College of Physicians 1980-84, and is currently executive Secretary, West African Postgraduate Medical College.

Professor (Chief) Oyediran is a member of the Church Committee, Iyeru-Okin African Church, Offa, Secretary, All Saints' Church Jericho, Ibadan and member, Board of Governors, Methodist High School, Ibadan, He is a keen Rotarian (Paul Haris Fellow and past Director, Vocational Service), and member of the House of Lords.

He has been happily married to Omotola Olubunmi (nee Awolowo) since 1963, and the marriage is blessed with three daughters and one son,
